Pacific Brewing Laboratory

Pacific Brewing Laboratory, better known as Pac Brew Lab, started life as a microbrewery out of San Francisco, where brewers Bryan Hermannsson and Patrick Horn would experiment with new beer flavors, styles, and brewing techniques in their garage/laboratory.

From their start in 2009, when Bryan and Patrick would give away their beer to a handful close friends, they quickly expanded, and are now running bi-monthly, totally free event with hundreds of new friends, along with a sampling of great local street food vendors.

Patrick and Bryan brew small batches that allow them to focus on constant experimentation, and they have been known to create exotic beer styles such as their Hibiscus Saison, Squid Ink Black IPA, Chamomile Ale, Lemongrass IPA, and Szechwan Peppercorn Red ale. Their ongoing offering includes Squid Ink, the India black ale, and Nautilus, the hibiscus saison, and their beers are now available in more than 60 Bay Area locations.

Pac Brew Lab was recently featured in a new video series called Meet the Makers, which gives a closer look at this unique brewing duo and the laboratory they’ve worked to create:

SAVOR Flowers Video

Another group dipping their toe into the waters of beer video production is the Brewers Association and CraftBeer.com, which just debuted this look into The Making of SAVOR Flowers, a beer from the creative minds of Jim Koch (Samuel Adams) and Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head).

Savor Flowers

The beer itself was brewed using rose water distilled at Dogfish Head, experimental hops, jasmine, hibiscus, lavender and honey. It was then aged in tanks with a special tincture that was made in Barrel One, the barrel that helped start the extreme brewing movement when it was used in the first aging of Sam Adams Tripple Bock.

According to Jim: “Sam and I had a great time gathering these ingredients, and I am excited to collaborate with such an innovative brewer on this beer for SAVOR. Sam’s originality and imagination are endless—he came up with the creative idea of distilling rosewater for this brew. We share the same intense passion for pushing the conventional definition of what beer can be and we put that same passion into our beers.”

And according to Sam: “Jim is the godfather of craft beer, and he’s got unbelievable ideas about what beer can be, along with the knowledge and palate to make those crazy beer dreams come true. I am with him on his philosophy and thrilled to be working together on this groundbreaking brew. We share a commitment to elevating beer to its proper infinite height, as both a beverage and a pairing for food.”
